Originating from the United States of America and founded in 2022 by Ultimate Fighting Championship chief executive officer Dana White, Power Slap puts the strength, endurance and toughness of its competitors to the ultimate test.

The concept is pretty simple. Two unarmed competitors slap each other as hard as possible across multiple rounds until a winner is officially declared by the officials.

Power Slap held its first major event, Power Slap 1, in March 2023 and it has since gone from strength to strength.

What are the rules of Power Slap?

Power Slap uses similar rules to those already in place across other slap-fighting leagues.

Fights are usually scheduled for between three and five rounds, with the specified amount chosen by the promoter. No bout can exceed 10 rounds.

Before each match takes place, there is a coin toss to decide which fighter will be striking first.

Once the first striker has been officially decided and the fighters are ready to go, the first striker has a 60-second time limit to land the first blow.

The slap must make contact below the eye but also above the chin. Fighters are also not allowed to lead with their palm, this is to ensure that all contact between the hand and face occurs at the exact same time.

When being slapped, the fighter is not allowed to flinch, raise their shoulders or tuck in their chin, they must take the slap cleanly.

Once a fighter has been struck, they have 60 seconds to recover, return to their fighting position and return a slap.

Competitors are not allowed to use their hands to help stay upright or any other form of support assistance during the match. They must remain standing freely throughout the whole contest.

How do you win in Power Slap?

Just like MMA and boxing, fighters can win by knockout (KO), technical knockout (TKO) or on a points decision.

A TKO is when the competitor makes the referee's verbal 10 count after being knocked down but is then deemed unfit to continue.

The judges use a 10 point-must system to assess the fighters and decide the winner if no KO or TKO has taken place.

Judges will rate the quality of the slaps, recovery time and speed of reactions.

A round winner will score the maximum 10 points with the opponent scoring nine points or fewer.

What equipment is required for Power Slap?

Competitors have to wear both a mouthguard and inner ear protectors to minimise the risk of serious injury.

They are not allowed to wear any jewellery on their face, neck, arms or fingers, while hand wrapping and hand tape, as well as hats and headgear, are also banned during a contest.

Fighters are provided with chalk and this is primarily used to indicate where the slap has landed on the opponent’s face.

How many different divisions are there in Power Slap?

Like all combat sports, athletes in Power Slap are separated by weight and gender.

The male weight classes in Power Slap are consistent with those in MMA. There is Welterweight, Middleweight, Light Heavyweight, Heavyweight and Super Heavyweight.

Featherweight is currently the only class for female competitors, although this is expected to change in the near future.

Where are Power Slap events hosted?

The first eight Power Slap events were all held in the US state of Nevada.

The five events from Power Slap 1 to Power Slap 5 took place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Power Slap 6 was hosted in Spring Valley and the promotion then returned to Las Vegas.

Power Slap 9 will be held in Abu Dhabi, the first live event outside of the US.
