What is the PDC World Matchplay?
The PDC World Matchplay is a 32-player tournament featuring the best darts players in the world. It is held at the Winter Gardens complex in the city of Blackpool.
First played in 1994, it has undergone a lot of changes in its short lifetime. It is now contested between the top 16 players in the PDC Order of Merit, who are seeded, and 16 more players who qualify through the Pro Tour Order of Merit.
The PDC World Matchplay is played over the course of five rounds; First Round, Second Round, Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and the Final. Each match is the best of a specified number of legs, a number which increases as the tournament progresses.
After the final round, the winner is presented with the Phil Taylor Trophy, in honour of Taylor’s achievements at the tournament.
Taylor won the PDC World Matchplay 16 times during his career and still holds a high number of records, some of which may never be broken!
Michael van Gerwen, Gary Anderson, Luke Humphries, Peter Wright and Rod Harrington are some other previous winners of the famous event.
Popular PDC World Matchplay Betting Markets
Match Result: The simplest way to bet on any darts clash at the PDC World Matchplay. Predict who you think will win the match.
Over/Under 180s: Everyone loves a 180, don’t they? Well, this market allows you to bet on the number of 180s in a match, either from a specific player or the combined total of the two. Each selection will be over or under a specific value. For example, Luke Littler to hit over 8.5 180s in the match.
Total Legs: Select whether you think the total number of legs in a match will be over or under a specific value. For example, over 10.5 legs in the match.
9 Dart Finish in the Match: Predict whether you think there will be a 9 Dart Finish in the match. This finish, the lowest number of darts possible to check out from 501, is quite rare in a televised game, so the PDC World Matchplay odds here will often be fairly high.
170 Finish in the Match: Predict whether a player will record a 170 finish (T20, T20, Bullseye). This is the highest three-dart checkout possible and like a 9 Dart Finish, a 170 is not something you see in every game!
PDC World Matchplay Betting Tips
Analyse form: Form and confidence are huge in the world of darts, perhaps more so than other individual sports. If a highly-ranked player has hit their stride on the Pro Tour ahead of the PDC World Matchplay, it is usually wise to try and seek value in their tournament odds. The Premier League of Darts and the World Cup of Darts are two big events which precede the PDC World Matchplay, so check out the stats from those to try and see if you can spot some interesting trends.
Beware the underdog: Do not be fooled into thinking that only seeded players progress to the latter stages of the tournament. The PDC World Matchplay is a breeding ground for underdog stories, with highly-ranked players regularly dropping out of the tournament in the First Round.
Head-to-head records: In darts, certain players have the beating of another, regardless of any difference in ranking. So make sure to study the recent head-to-head record between the two players before placing any darts bet on a match.

NetBet Sport’s dedicated in-play page will feature all the matches at the tournament, allowing you to stay on top of markets and the odds, which change in front of your eyes as the darts land on the board.
Notice a certain player has really found their range and is hitting 180s for fun in the opening few legs of a match? Then head to the live betting markets and bet on that player to hit a high number of 180s in the entirety of the game.
Live PDC World Matchplay betting only enhances the experience of watching this thrilling darts tournament!
